I had the carbon tubing custom fabricated. I've had the finished aluminum parts on the shelf for about a year...but no Carbon Alpha beyond the original prototype has ever been seen. Why you ask? Using a triple LED and TIR optic moved those components much closer to the front of the light. This left me enough room for extra deep grooving for improved thermal performance and extra awesome. The bezel is lightly crenelated so you can see if the light is on or off when you place it bezel down on a flat surface.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003e\u003cimg alt=\"\" src=\"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/1356\/1883\/files\/carbonTriple-600.jpg?v=1487156078\" style=\"float: none;\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan class=\"highlight-text\"\u003eThis is my first light based around a triple LED.\u003c\/span\u003e I generally find performance of single LEDs to be superior in a light this size, but seriously, how cool does that look! :) Right now this light is ONLY available with the Nichia 219 High CRI which produces over 500 lumens at 3.4A of drive current. \u003cstrong\u003eHowever, if you want to send me 3 \"bare\" LEDs that fit the standard Cree XPG footprint then I will install them for you, but you'll have to source them yourself. \u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan class=\"highlight-text\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"text\"\u003eBasically \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003eI haven't had enough time to test enough XPGs to know what bin will meet my standards for a 6500K cool white option.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003e\u003cimg alt=\"\" src=\"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/1356\/1883\/files\/carbonGlow-600.jpg?v=1487156108\" style=\"float: none;\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan class=\"highlight-text\"\u003eOf course this light has to have some extra cool hidden features as well.\u003c\/span\u003e The Alpha Carbon will come assembled with GITD in the head, but it can be left out by special request. Charging the GITD on high for a few seconds actually produces several minutes of usable glow in total darkness...meaning the glow produces enough light to see with (up close) for a couple minutes. The glow fades quickly but will continue to produce visible light for 4-6 hours...pretty much normal glow stuff :)\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003e\u003cimg alt=\"\" src=\"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/1356\/1883\/files\/carbonInside-600.jpg?v=1487156133\" style=\"float: none;\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan class=\"highlight-text\"\u003eThe inner core is machined to reduce weight and maintain the structural integrity of a solid metal Alpha light.\u003c\/span\u003e The tube is slip fit over the metal core and held in place by the pocket clip\/tail cap assembly. As with all Alpha lights, it's necessary to change the battery via the head, not the tail.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe core\/sleeve configuration is basically an engineering necessity. I've had people ask why where isn't \"more carbon and less metal\" on this light. It's not possible (for a variety of reasons) without a complete overhaul to the basic dimensions and design of the light. Anything else would be functional compromise, and I'll always compromise form before function. However, the mandrel has about 1 degree of taper along it's length so the carbon can be removed when it's finished curing. If the mandrel was exactly the same diameter on both ends, you'd never get the tube off the metal rod. Unfortunately this means every single piece of tube has a different diameter at each end.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003ePlease note, there is some variation in how tight the sleeve fits the core. \u003c\/strong\u003eNickel plating adds thickness to the core, so it's a bit of a guessing game when trying to get the fit just right. This also means the sleeve will only fit on the core in one direction. It's titanium: boom.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e The machining details on the head evolved over a number of different special editions of the Alpha ICE (Integrated Cooling Element). As always, I'm looking for balance and classic lines. The entire light is machined from solid Domestic CP2 Titanium bar stock. No tubing is used in the manufacturing of this particular light; not because it's a bad idea, you just can't get it in the right size. Ever try drilling a 3\/4\" hole 4\" deep in titanium? Yeah.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cimg src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/1356\/1883\/files\/4_0f94319f-282d-4a05-94e5-3129fc05fe21.jpg?v=1489901413\" alt=\"\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003cspan class=\"highlight-text\"\u003eAh yes, thermal conductivity. \u003c\/span\u003eWe are producing a lot of lumens and that makes a lot of heat. Deep grooving on the head helps get heat out of the light and into the environmet as quickly as possible. Everyone is going to ask why this light is made from CP2 (Grade 2) titanium and not from 6Al\/4V (Grade 5) titanium. Sure, 6\/4 is stronger...but we are making a flashlight, not a fighter jet. Strength doesn't really matter when aluminum will do just fine.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat the flashlight maker should concern themselves with is thermal conductivity. CP2 titanium conducts heat 3x better than 6\/4 titanium. End of discussion? This means you aren't supposed to make threaded parts out of it. Stainless steel is the same. If you ever torque a stainless nut onto a stainless bolt you are never getting the two apart.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe can get away with this in a flashlight because there isn't a lot of torque applied. However, this \u003cstrong\u003edoes\u003c\/strong\u003e mean that proper thread lubrication is ESSENTIAL. If you aren't the type to maintain your lights on a regular basis (clean\/lube) then don't buy this light, you won't be happy with it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFirst, DO NOT change the battery through the tailcap.
